Health Visitors in Your AreaThornhill Health Visitors are available to visit families with children under 5 years to give advice and support. The Thornhill Health Visiting team is made up of a skills mix that include 4 Health Visitors, 1 Community Health nurse, 1 Nursery nurse, 1 Admin Support worker and more recently, Locality Family Support workers. This nationwide government scheme fosters an aim to "work with families and link closely with other agencies and services in the area." The introduction of Locality Family Support workers to work alongside the Health Visiting and School Nursing team has been a significant step forward for Thornhill families requiring extra support. The Locality Family Support workers are residents of the Thornhill area and have a wealth of knowledge on local issues and current problems within the locality. The Health Visiting team are now based at at the Thornhill Centre for Healthy Living. The health visitors believe that working out of the Centre for Healthy Living will benefit the community with a more family-friendly approach as there are now closer links with other agencies that include midwives, school nurses, and improved links with GP and dental services. With home visits as the largest aspect of their jobs, the team have also devised the ‘Family Point’ sessions held on Fridays at the Centre for Healthy Living from 9:30am to 11:30am and also 1pm to 3pm every Tuesday at the Eastpoint Centre. The themes for Family Point include Health, Help and Play and offer the chance for local residents to “work with other professionals on a less formal basis.” The Health Visitors also run a Stay and Play session at the Eastpoint Centre on Wednesdays from 10am to 12pm. Thornhill health and Wellbeing Network (THAWN), supported by Thornhill Health and Wellbeing Project have successfully bid for money, from the PCT Community Health Fund, to run a Leg Club in Thornhill.
Leg Clubs are a national charitable network with the aim of encouraging people with any problems involving legs from varicose vein, skin tears, eczema and ulcers to difficulty in walking to get out and meet others in a similar position. Instead of waiting at home for treatment from a district nurse, residents can now attend the social club, have a cup of tea or coffee, chat with friends old and new AND have their wounds dressed by trained nurses. Transport will be provided, if required, and it is hoped that organisations such as the SCPCT Podiatry Service will have sessions.
